I learned yesterday that Pastor Billy Joe Daugherty (Victory Christian Center) was punched during a church service last week by a man named Steven Wayne Rodgers. Billy Joe would later require two stitches, but instead of stopping the service he continued. While continuing the service, he publically forgave Rodgers and prayed for him. Now this occurred during the 11am service held in the Mabee Center, so there would have been at least 3000 people present. He would later visit Rodgers in jail but Daugherty has not pressed charges.
I know Billy Joe. I attended and served (in the youth group) at his church for about four years while I lived in Tulsa. During those four years I saw him in many situations. I have always been impressed with the caliber of the man. He is a great roll model and he practices what he preaches. I have a great deal of respect for him.
I also read that a few years ago Rodgers also punched Richard Roberts, son of Oral Roberts. Roberts also forgave Rodgers and did not press charges.
I'll assume you meant "punched" where the post reads "pinched", since stitches were mentioned.
It sounds like Rodgers either has a mental problem or was trying to make some sort of twisted statement. Very dumb.

I was at that service. I was angry when that happened, because like you, I have such respect for Pastor Billy Joe. His response by praying and forgiving and ministering to us kept offense from creeping in and set such a Godly example in a true What Would Jesus Do fashion. As he said in this morning's service: that was nothing compared to what Jesus suffered. He then went on to minister to people who have been hit by circumstances in their lives. It's been such an inspiration. Glory to God.

My husband and I have been members at Victory Christian Center (VCC) for 25 years. Pastor Daugherty (BJD)was my youth Pastor before that time. I have personally known him and his wife for over 30 years. We were in attendance at this service. My husband and I are part of a team of workers that assist in the 11:00 service, (one of four Sunday services). Regarding the "hit": The man that accomplished the “hit” would have not have been welcomed to attend most churches, as he was a “street person”. During this service, approximately 15% of the 2000 in attendance that day are what most people would call “transient” (people that come in on an occasional visit, some poor or homeless.) At VCC we welcome anyone from any social or economical status. Not only do we welcome them with lip service, we pay to have buses bring them to the service. These are people that might not otherwise attend unless brought in. I ask -How many churches bring in over 300 persons weekly to worship service? OR do you know a Pastor that will have a altar call at EVERY service with salvations and healing? At VCC we are NOT about counting numbers but about the Fathers business of the “Great Commission” … Go unto all the world… Pastor BJD is a man after Gods own heart. “Willing that none parish.. but have everlasting life..” BJD greets the crowds at the alter and prays for them, often lingering after service to lean a heart and ear to those that need to share. What kind of person needs Jesus? … It’s the hurting, lonely, sick that need our touch, even if their “touch” in return is less than welcoming.
